New Zealand #9… Beautiful Abel Tasman!

December 08, 2016

(Português no fim)
We were looking forward for the amazing beaches on this natural reserve park by the sea! We arrived to the “base” in Marahau and the weather was great, it was even warm! Shoes off and we went to explore the beach! Tide was very low so we played in the sand and walked on puddles until we reached the sea… we got all wet, mainly Francisco that looked like he went for a swim. We were so happy! We had plans to take the water taxi and camp (in a tent) in the middle of the park at the beach, but it was raining a lot the next day so our plans were in standby. We waited 3 rainy days for the sun to come out!
We woke up early packed everything (tent, sleeping bags and supplies) and took the water taxi, 30 minutes ride, to Anchorage. Getting to the sea is an adventure in itself, kids though it was very interesting being on a boat riding in the street (a tractor pulling a trailer with the boat comes to pick you up and you hop directly on the boat). The tide is so low that the tractor has to drive all the way on the sand until the boat is well in the water…
We wanted to stay in Te Pukatea, a perfect place to camp, but with the kids we chose to stay in Anchorage campsite due to the toilets, drinkable water and some other amenities. It was our first time camping “in the wild” so we went for the easier place.
We were all very excited, specially the kids, they had been asking to sleep on a tent for ages. As soon as we got there we set up the tent, had some lunch, put in our bathing suites and went for a walk. They have some really nice walks around the area. We stopped at Te Pukatea and spent some time at the beach. It was still early when we got back to Anchorage beach so we stayed the rest of the day there, kids climbing rocks and jumping on the water. It was getting dark and we needed light to prepare dinner (we took everything pre cooked, so that was an easy one). Our “neighbours” were some nice germans and we had dinner all together and stayed up until late talking. Kids went inside the tent with the flashlights and were happily playing, not wanting to go to sleep. It was not a very comfortable night, we didn’t had much sleep. 2 in each sleeping bag and sharing a small mattress was not very clever, they are little but they already take space, so we should have brought more sleeping bags. In the morning Pedro and I were really sleepy but the 2 monkeys were jumping up and down asking for breakfast and ready to play! It was very warm, too hot! We packed everything and left it inside the tent and went for some more walks, but the best part was the beach so we ‘ended the walks’ and spent the rest of the time on the beach. It’s so beautiful (just look at the photos), every bay and every place of the Abel Tasman park, the color of the water, the beaches, we wanted to spend there more time… if it wasn't for the weather… the forecast was not good for the rest of the days, it actually started to rain when we were in the water taxi coming back at the end of the day. We spent one more night at the campsite in Marahau, it was the place we spent more days since we got to New Zealand. The park was good and the people there were incredibly nice, there were some families with kids around, the playground was always fun!
All in all we were very lucky, we had to wait for 3 days, but the weather couldn’t have been better when we finally went to explore the Abel Tasman, 2 perfect summer days in the middle of some horrible weather…
*****
Sapatos fora e fomos explorar a praia.
