New Zealand #16… Hobbiton!

This was the highlight of the North Island! We are not big fans of The Lord of the Rings, we’ve seen Hobbit and half of the first Lord of the Rings, but still, we really wanted to go here. Everyone, fans and no fans, kept telling us how amazing this place was and the expectations were huge. Normally when a person is expecting so much of a place it turns out a little bit disappointing but in this case it was even nicer than we were expecting. They created a big “town” just for a few minutes of the movie. This was all built to film the outside scenes, the hobbit houses were empty. Some parts didn’t even made the cut to appear on the movie, others only a few seconds. The details are incredible, everything has so much attention and care… You really have to come here! The only way to go there and visit the place is on a tour, but it’s ok. Thousands of people visit this place and it’s always fully booked (don’t forget to book it in advance) but it’s so well organised that you don’t actually feel the place is crowded and you can wonder around almost on your own. The tour ends with a hobbit beer on the pub… We LOVED it!
There’s the option to do it at night with a buffet dinner included, apparently is amazing and really worth it. We tried but it was fully booked for the days we were able to go. At the end, it was for the better, with the 2 small kids that would have been too much and too late!
Once again, like it is usually the case with New Zealand, pictures speak much more than words…

Hobbiton foi o ponto alto da ilha norte! Não somos grandes fãs do Senhor dos Anéis, vimos o Hobbit e metade do primeiro Senhor dos Anéis, mas mesmo assim, queríamos muito ir a este sítio. Toda a gente, fãs e não fãs, nos disse que era espectacular e as expectativas eram enormes. Normalmente, quando se espera tanto de um sítio acaba por ser uma decepção, ou não tão bom como esperávamos mas neste caso foi ainda melhor do que estávamos à espera. Construíram uma “cidade” enorme para aparecer apenas alguns minutos no filme. Toda esta cidade foi feita para as cenas de exterior e as casas são apenas fachada. Algumas das filmagens não passaram o corte e outras aparecem apenas uns segundos. Dizer que tudo é feito com muita atenção ao detalhe é pouco. Vale mesmo a pena vir ver. A única maneira de visitar o set é em grupo, num tour, mas está bem organizado. Milhares de pessoas vêm aqui todos os dias e está sempre cheio (não esquecer de reservar com alguma antecedência) mas está bem feito que o sítio não parece cheio e quase dá para vaguear por conta própria. O tour acaba com uma cerveja Hobbit no pub…claro que adoramos!
Existe a opção de fazer esta visita à noite com jantar incluído e, segundo nos disseram é espectacular. Ainda tentamos mas já não havia vagas para os dias em que podíamos. Talvez tenha sido melhor assim, com 2 miúdos pequenos provavelmente teria sido demasiado tarde e difícil de os entreter. Uma vez mais, como é normal na NZ, as fotografias valem mais que as palavras.
